Hi Dare,

Since you represent PPG, I have a corporate question. What ever happened to Delstar? Is it still being marketed? I have been a big fan of Delstar/Delthane in years past but have been unable to get any locally for a few years now - the local PPG jobber no longer maintains the mix colors for it. Since AE has lost favor in the autorefinish world has PPG discontinued it? The only AE I can now get in PPG is the OMNI MAE. I don't think that is quite up to par with DuPont's Centari (still available locally). Delstar was on pretty much equal footing with Centari but I actually liked it better. I have, more or less, gravitated to OMNI AU (MTK) in PPG as a replacement for Delstar (Centari is no longer mixable in tractor colors). The MTK works well but not as good as Centari and certainly not as good as the old Delstar, IMO. The Deltron line is over my cost breakpoint :o). I also suspect it is not mixable in original tractor colors either.

Thanks,

Rod,
To answer your questions directly, yes, we still make Delstar. You are right when you say AE has fallen out of favor with body shops, so a lot of jobbers (people who sell paint) have elected to discontinue stocking Delstar, since OMNI has an acrylic enamel. OMNI is a less expensive line, as we have pulled out some of the performance additives that we put in the "good stuff". OMNI MTK is an excellent product for the money, but, again, you are right, it probably does not compare with Delstar. If you cannot find anyone with Delstar, OMNI MTK is your next best bet. But the Concept DCC (Deltron urethane) is availble in most of the tractor colors I have in my books and computer. Although you hit on the biggest issue...$$$$$. You may want to call around to some other PPG distributors to see if any of them still stock Delstar, as not all have gotten rid of it. Hope this helps.

Like Rod I fell in love with Delstar, just in time for my dealer to discontinue it. One of the things I realy liked about Delstar was that it was very forgiving for temp variations from optimum and thus gave good results in my better than crude but less than a professonal paint booth. I do most of my painting work in the winter and unless I do some drastic changes in my shop heating I have a heck of a time getting to and maintaining 70 degrees. 60 is very easy to get, 65 maybe. I have switched to Omni MTK and have had some problems, all related to air-surface temps I am sure. It seems like the componants I have tried have a very narrow range of proper operation. Sorry I dont have the numbers that I tried in the past handy here but is there a reducer & hardener combination that will give good results I am after (Delstar like) at the temps I gave? I like to be a bit fast than too slow in my mixes.
Thanks, Butch
