I am in the process of restoring '49 super A. My local dealer carries Tisco paint. A review of the archives revealed a six of one/half dozen of the other regarding the quality of this paint. The tractor will be used in our row crop operation as a cultivator/side dresser so a show quality finish is not required, but paint must be durable. Anyone care to tip the scales on this issue?

Man, this subject will get you any answer you can dream of. My 3 cents worth is that I have used both the $15 a gallon paint and the $100(plus componants) paint and have settled upon the middle of the road automotive paints. In Ditzler that is Omni MTK. Runs aound $50 (again plus componants) for the color I use. A person can get decent results with the dime store paint, if hardened, kept inside and fussed over a bit. My first restoration has almost $700 worth of PPG's finest products on it, is 6 years old and of course looks like new today. My second restoration wears $15 Farm and Fleet paint over Rustolium primer and is going on 5 years old now. It's not a showboat but a user. It goes to shows now and then and after a bath it's still very presentable. I'd guess by the time it's needs paint for fading I'm going to have enough scratched and knocked off that it would need painting anyway to be in "show condition". I will say that if the equipment sits outside use good paint. The cheap stuff will fade before your eyes hardened or not.

Don't screw up a restoration by buying cheap paint, might last for a while, but will fade. At a minimum, use Case-IH 2150, one step up will be an acrylic enamel without hardener such as PPG Omni, you can add hardener to the PPG acrylic enamel or the Case-IH synthetic enamel for more gloss and a much more durable finish; one more step up is acrylic urethane (must have hardener). With hardener, be sure to use a supplied air system. Depends on what you want it to look like and how long you want it to last. Paint is the cheap part of a restoration.

I have purchased the IH 2150 to use on my super A. Please tell me what to add as a hardner and anything else that might be `a help to this novice. I also have the IH primer, Am I going in the right direction? Not to mention that I have some POR15 which I was told will help fill in some pips and rust holes and such. Any advice is appreciated.

I haven't used 2150, so I don't know what the recommended hardener is -- I would suggest you ask on the Farmall board, someone should know. The PPG Omni acrylic enamel that I have used is mixed 8:1:1, Paint:hardener:reducer. I would recommend the PPG product over the IH one. As to primer, an epoxy primer is best, with a sandable surfacer over that, on the sheet metal. Topcoat can be applied directly over the epoxy on the cast with no other primer--the cast does need to be clean. I have heard POR 15 can be used, but I have not used it. I prefer to remove all rust, rather than trying to cover or convert it. Read the recent thread on the Restoration and Repair board about filling rust pits.
