I have a red 2 botom trailer Oliver plow and I would like to paint it. what is the best way to prep it. wire brush on a electric drill or sandblast(both)? either will be a big project. I plan on painting it with a air powered spray gun. it will see regular use. also can i get oliver yellow paint(for the wheels) from a agco dealership? thanks

Ross, i have painted several old pieces of equipment. I have a decent size ari compressor and i use a wire brush on a hand grinder to get the scale and surface rust off. When it gets so the metal looks rusty, but everything is solid and hard, wash it off good, then i brush or spray on a coat of red oxide primer that you can buy at the hardware store or farm center. only cost $20 and covers good and seals good. I let it dry for a couple weeks. Then you can finish depending on your price. If you just want a color, use $25 paint from the farm store. It covers, but wont be shinny in 2 years. If you want it to be shinny and hold up for 10 years get automotive paint from the local body shop, but it cost $150 gallon.

Its an oliver 219 radex says so on the botoms plus there were no cockshutt dealers in my area and I bought it from a friend at work whose dad bought it from the local dealer many years ago new. Oliver first made there plows red my dad and my uncle plowed with red olivers behind a W-6 and a M in the 60's but they (the plows) turned green i'D say in the 40's or so

ross, if you can stand the cost check to see if anyone does bead blasting in you area , this does not pit the surface as does sand blasting and also does not leave really fine grains of sand on the part, also check ont power coating, will never have a rust problem again this is a fine way to finnish a part and can be painted over and the paint stays! charles

I agree with Charles, bead blasting would be the best alternative. I would sand blast second, and I do a lot of it. Sand gets everywhere! Also, look into commercial sand blasting. I used a local company, the price was good, and the parts are CLEAN. A good filler-primer will cover the pits, if you are concerned about that. Good luck!!
