Can anyone give me any information on spraying John Deere enamel paint from an HVLP gun. I've just bought the gun and have never sprayed with one before.Do I use regular paint thinner, and how much? Also can I use a regular charcoal respirator? My only experience prior to this has been with a spray can, so any info.would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

I use a HVLP sprayer I got from TIP. This thing has its own compressor and blows heated air. I use a mix of 10 parts paint to 2 parts reducer for John Deere paint from the dealer. The key I found with heated air is to use a reducer slower than that normally used for the temperature your spraying at.

Other things I noticed are that JD green from the dealer dries allot slower that JD yellow from the dealer. The yellow doesn't cover worth a darn and needs extra coats.

As already stated, go find an old piece of steel and practice before starting on your treasure.

this is a great tip, the jd yellow you buy from the dealer or any other yellow from others have a hard time covering. You are right, no matter how many coats you apply the under primer and rims seem to allways bleed through the yellow paint i found that when painting yellow on the rims and casts i will put 2-3 light coats on, does not need to be to thick let dry for a day them come back and spray 2-3 more coats this seems to work out the best for me the results are fantastic. the first 2-3 coats the day before seems to coverup the primer and fill in the imperfections and the second days 2-3 coats really brings out the shine and beauty of yellow painted rims on a john deere

Tim, I can't give you details on using a HVLP but the basics are the same for any spray application. You will have to test the thinned paint on a test piece before painting a large piece until you get your gun adjusted & the paint to lay down the way you want, I use a good quality enamel reducer for the temperature I am painting at & a synthetic paint hardener & usually thin 10 parts J.D. paint, 1&1/4 part hardener & 3 parts reducer (that is what works for me, your technique & speed with the gun might differ SO TEST ON A NON-IMPORTANT PIECE FIRST). You can use a regular charcoal respirator but I wouldn't paint long with it & use new canisters each new day of use. I personally use a fresh air system & recommend it for all painting.
