Tinkering with some small parts. Is Rustoleum rusty metal primer a good base coat on metal that was sand blasted. And if so what is a good easy to work with filler to use on real small surface pitting. Can the filler be applied over the primer. Just want the tractor to look decent. No show piece. Any thoughts on the use of Jasco prep and primer Ater blasting? Thanks

Most any filler should work on the rusty metal primer, as long as it has fully cured. I have put on a couple coats of rusty metal primer, let it cure then sanded and put another coat on to hide pocks in metal surfaces. The stuff has enough body to act as a filler if you use multiple coats. The rusty metal primer works fine on bare metal or rusty metal.

Hi Red,

I think you will find that the Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer should NOT be used on clean sandblasted metal. I believe in NEEDS rust to perform as claimed. If you have a nice clean sandblasted surface, your best product is an epoxy primer such as PPG MP170. For minor surface pitting look into a two-part polyester filler that comes in a tube. 3M and others make it. It can be applied over the epoxy. I don't know about over the Rustoleum since I have never tried it that way. I would be suspicious of doing that.
