How good would say adding hardener to paints such as rustolium or the stuff found at dealers or clearcoating over these types of paints hold up vs a urathane base or imron paint?

Do as Butch says -- it is never a good idea to mix different brands of paint components. Cheap paints don't pay in the long run.

I'll bet you a cup of coffee and a slice of pie to go with it that by the time you buy the hardener and clearcoat materials you will have almost as much in your efforts circumvent buying quality paint as if you had just gone ahead and used it to start with. Check on the costs of your cheapo+hardener+clearcoat job and compare it to $125 for a gallon of PPG OMNI MTK with the hardener and reducer, that's what I paid last time for my brand's color. Other colors will be higher or lower. To answer your question, I tried to use the cheapo paints too, as far as I can tell there is very, very little increase in fade protection from using the hardener, it does however speed the cure time up considerably. I am not sure what the clear coat will do for it but if you decide to go that route make darn sure the coatings are compatable by spraying a small hiddon place first and wait a few days for signs of problems before you take a chance of ruining all your work.
