I'm going to use the PPG Omni line of paint on a Farmall 200. Also, I was planning on using MP170 Epoxy Primer. What can I use under the primer that will kill any rust that I might have? This is my first try at painting and want to get it right. Thanks for your time.

First remove ALL the rust you can. I would not recommend using products that they "say" will kill heavy rust. Then use a product such as Picklex 20 (do a search). It is sprayed on with a squirt bottle and smoothed out with a brush. Can be painted the next day, or scuffed and painted if it sets for a few days. It is not designed for heavy rust, but will work fine for clean metal with a little rust remaining in the pores, and it will neutralize light surface rust or flash rust. Also protects the metal for long periods of time before priming, as long as it is kept dry. There are other products, but I have had good luck with this one.

Thanks for the info, it looks like just what I need. How much would you need to cover one small tractor ...ie a Farmall 200? I don't post often, but the info on this site is the BEST!!!
Thank You.

One pint, and you will have some left over if you use it sparingly. I usually order 2 pints at a time, if for some reason I need to reapply. I use it on everything because it etches the metal, improving paint adhesion. The combination of Picklex 20 and epoxy primer is a good substitute for etch primer.

I used the same prep and paint. Picklex kept my sheetmetal in the garage for almost two years before I got to painting it. And I do like the way the Omni looks. I can hardly wait for the warm weather so I can finish.

Thanks to you both for the good information! I'm going give it a try and if it don't come out right I will do it again!
