Just finished painting a B John Deere today and used a HVLP gun, I'm using the same paint I always use but instead of using almost a gallon I just used a quart. Is this normal I applied three coats like always, it took a lot more time, tractor looks good, just hard to beleive I have enough paint on it

Forgot to add, Yes it is normal to be amazed by the paint savings the first time a person uses an HVLP. Back when I was using PPG Delstar and probably had $175 in a gallon of paint with all the compaonants I figured that my HVLP was paid for in material savings halfway through the 2nd job.

I agree with the others, a quart sounds purdy thin. Of course you might have a better gun and techinque than me. On that sized tractor with different color wheels I would expect to use the better part of two quarts on the main part with my Astro HVLP. I run the factory recomended 40 psi at the inlet and that is supposed to give something like 8-10 PSI at the air cap and have never messed with it, maybe I need to?

I'VE PAINTED SEVERAL TRACTORS USING AN HVLP GUN. A QUART SOUNDS A LITTLE LEAN ON THE PAINT SIDE. SOMETHING I'VE LEARNED ON SHOOTING A TRACTOR IS TO TURN THE FAN WIDTH DOWN AND LOWER THE PRESSURE. IT TAKES LOTS OF TRIGGER MOTION TO GET EVERY NOOK AND CRANNY BUT IT MAKES A LOT BETTER FINISHED PRODUCT. GOOD LUCK!!

You are a better painter than me, never painted a B, but would probably take me 2 quarts, perhaps a little less, even though the wheels are a different color. The purpose of HVLP is to reduce overspray because of environmental concerns. If you put on 3 coats and it is covered, it is OK. You got more paint on than you would have using a gallon of conventional paint.

I was at the local cafe for lunch today and ran into a local guy who was a mechanic for the local John Deere dealership for thirty years, if we get stumpped on the old poppin Johns he is our go to man. He told me mother Deere just allowed them one quart of green and a pint of yellow per tractor. He also stated that with the paint guns of the time he never could get one painted with that ammount of material. Thanks guys for all your fine input
