Does anyone have any experience using Sherwin Williams 988 Self Etching Primer (in the spray can). This is in their automotive line of primers.

Just what does "self etching" mean?

Thanks..... .Mike

Etching can be done two ways, mechanicaly (sanding) or chemicaly (acid). What you are doing is providing a rough surface for the paint to "tooth" into for better adhesion. Chemical etching can be done very economicaly with a seperate etching product that you wipe on but I keep a self etching spray bomb around for little projects myself. The self etching paints work well and save a step on new metal. There is no need for chemicaly etching old metal that has been prepared for painting by blasting or sanding for old finish removal, it's already etched. It is my understanding that the self etching paints will not etch old paint just bare metal. The mist from spraying self etching paint is very irratable too, do it out side or with good respirator only.
