I am going to paint a 72 Ford pickup and was thinking of using the Omni line of primer and paint. Does it need to be clear coated? I was on one of the hot rod forums and they said it did. I was under the impression it didn't. Is there another paint the is as reasonably prices that I could use. I'm not looking for a show finish, but at least want it to look good.

Thanks,
Bob

Bob,one question for you,are you using a bake booth? If so,I have found Global paint very good as a single stage paint and also basecoat, clearcoat. But as you know a better paint means alittle more money.Personally if I were doing a truck like yours I would basecoat clearcoat. The company I use to work for had a 9 year warranty on Global paint.Think about it and ask around.Paul

It does not need to be clearcoated, however if you do clearcoat, the paint job will last longer. If you clearcoat be careful,it runs pretty easy.It does a beautiful job,and is easy to color sand and buff. What color are you thinking of painting it?

Hi Bob,

Terry is correct. The OMNI MBC (bc/cc) product is the only one in the OMNI line that requires a clearcoat. Both the MTK (acylic urethane) and MAE (acrylic enamel) OMNI products are single stage paints that do not require clearcoating to obtain the gloss.

Be sure to obtain the PPG technical data sheets for whatever product you use. There is a lot of detailed usage information in these sheets, sometimes referred to as "P" sheets. For example, there can be several different hardeners and reducers to use with the same product, depending on temperature at time of spraying. The tech sheets will explain the appropriate additives. You can get the OMNI tech sheets here.

If you want to investigate another competitive line of "economy" automotive paints, check into DuPont's NASON line. I haven't used any NASON products myself but have heard some good things about them. I believe they are similar in cost to the equivalent in OMNI.

bob, omni mbc is basecoat/clearcoat..tell them you want your paint in mtk..it is single stage and doesn't have to be clearcoated.the mix ratio is 4 parts of paint, 1 part of mh hardener, and 1 part of mr reducer. omni is a decent paint but kind of thin. a lot of the formulas say "may require extra coats" terry
