I am sure this had been asked many times on here but I couldn't find a good link so here goes. What tips can you give a guy who has done very limited painting with a gun for mixing the paint and thinner or hardener. I am fixing to paint a Alllis G with Mystik ?(bought at Rural King) paint and hardener and am not real sure how much hardener or thinner to add when I do.

Hi Jeff,

Butch has given you good advice. If you are going to be using hardeners, I suggest you follow it even if you paint outside. If it's the cost of proper safety equipment that troubles you, I suggest you avoid the use of hardeners altogether. But...it's your health and your decision.

Get a hold of the manufacturer for mixing instructions if the are not on the cans, all brands differ in that respect. To get the ratios right it is best to get a mixing cup or mix ratio stick from an automotive paint supplier, I like the stick, some like the cups. Either one is self explanitory once you look them over. Get some strainers while you are there too and never pour mix into a gun without going through one. If nobody has warned you about the heath dangers from breathing hardened paint fumes please go down the list here and read up on it. You need an air supplied respirator, a mask doesn't cut the mustard.

Thanks for the info. I will look on the can and see what it says and if it is not there find the manufacturer and go that route. Never really thought about the strainer but will get one and use it. I will probably wind up painting this thing outside as we have no ventalation in the shop. I have a good mask and although it is not what I need it will have to do this time . If I keep painting them I'll look into the air supplied masks though. thanks for replying!

The mask may do this time, as you say -- but if you keep doing it, inside or out, you are very likely to get sick -- you could also get sick the first time.
