If I'm going to do my own painting on a weekend warrior basis, can anyone please offer some advice as to the size and brand of air compressor? I expect to do some mechanical work with it as well. Thanks!

If you already have a compressor (I only use belt driven speedaire compressors) but your tank is not large enough to give you the spray time you need, rather than change out the whole thing for a larger one, just buy a portable air tank for filling tires etc. 5- 10 gallon works well. Attatch it to your system with a short hose and t connector. Now you got more cubic feet, and you can use it when you need a protable tank away from home or out in the field to fill a tire. This will double the spray time of a 8 gallon compressor if you buy a 8 gallon tank. Yes it doubles the run time of the compressor too, but it still is nice to have a larger system at only the cost of a portable tank. Most cost less than 50 bucks. Vic.

Well if money is in good supply it's hard to beat an Ingersol Rand with the cast iron T-30 series pumps, they run slow and make as little noise as any. They are now producing a more economical line that seem to be a cut above most of the farm store compressors. If you have a TSC nearby they are selling both T-30 equiped and the economy line. Before Farm and Fleet went belly up I purchased a 6.5HP Coleman there and it has been a trouble free unit. Most of the real cheap air compressors are grossly over rated for both HP and CFMs, at least the few I have been around seem slow for their ratings and one of them won't start in cold temps.

I know I will never buy an oiless compressor again. I have a 30 gallon Craftsman that is so loud that I had to put it two rooms away from my shop. My neighbor also has an oiless that I can hear run down the block. The 30 gallon capacity works fine, (except for sand blasting) but I hate the irritating noise.

When buying an air compressor, it isn't how high the machine will pump the pressure to, it is the cubic feet per minute it produces. any air compressor will pump up to at least 100 lbs. or so. For painting you need one that has a lot of cfm, and at least a 30 gallon tank, preferably bigger! Otherwise, you'll have to stop and wait for the pump to catch up and stop. Then, after 30-40 seconds, it will come back on and you'll have to stop and wait again. Go to an automotive paint and/or welding supply store, and ask them which compressor will be best for your jobs that you want to do. And, take their advice! Those cheap little compressors sold by Sears and others are o.k. for pumping up tires, but not for painting, etc., which requires lots of cfm! Remember: The thrill of buying something for a cheap price is lost as you sit and wait for the compressor to catch up! Rusty Jones
