Old primer on tractor frame ('64 MF35)looks pretty good after power wash. Is it necessary to remove all old primer before re-painting? (See photo.)Or do I have to take it down to bare metal?

I plan to use red oxide primer and oil base w/hardener from Tractor Supply.

The engine was re-painted with rattle can in '71 after overhaul. Surprised to see it stuck on so well.

I agree with Butch in that I would avoid the TSC Paint. Use Omni MP 170 epoxy primer, followed by Omni MAE acylic enamel or Omni MTK acrylic urethane as Butch says.

Because of it's rough surface paint sticks very well to castings. You do need to get rid of the grease and oil but to get rid of all the paint requires blasting and in my opinion it isn't needed even for show quality paint to last. I wire wheel my castings with a stiff cup brush and grinder and get the hard to get at areas with a die grinder and brush. Then I wash again with a butyl cleaner. These are sold as various brands of "purple cleaner" at car parts stores. After the wash dries I blow the castings off, then prime. You would do yourself a big favour by checking out PPG OMNI MTK before you are set on the TSC paint, it's realy not that much more expensive to use in my color but the Massy Red might be more as the red pigments are the expensive ones.
