Orange peel paint

I am trying to paint a Model C Case with a 2 pack enamil. I completly cleaned the tractor (took months of work to get amost 70 years of grease and old paint of). I then primed it with an etch primer which went on nicely. I sprayed the 2 pack on the castings and it went on well.

I brought all the sheet metal home (farm is 500 miles away) and primed it with etch primer and again it went on nicely. When I sprayed the 2 pack on the sheet metal I made a mess with a terrible orange peel effect. I was using a different compressor and larger air hose on the farm but the same spray gun.

I used 50 pounds per square inch air pressure. Should I try a higher air pressure?

I have sanded it all back smooth with a random orbital sander then finished with 1200 wet and dry paper

I would be grateful for any tips

Bob

Reduce the paint, use a slower reducer and do not use a HVLP gun! Take a look, all new cars have orange peel. Paint shops must use HVLP,you do not! Mike

Orange peel is causeed by the material not flowing out evenly. Try to thin your paint just a touch more, lower your air to about 30 or 35 at the gun, and slow down your speed of your strokes. Slowing down will allow more paint to gather on the surface and allow it to "flow". Obviously this is just a guide, use your own judgement while spraying. Also, I would rough up those parts to 400 or 600 grit before spraying them.

Was there a dryer or an oiler on the air line. Maybe oil in the line some how.

Thanks for the information. I have now got the paint on without orange peel, but not a professional job. I guess I will improve with practice
