Have a 52 JD that was wire brushed down to some bare metal, and was cleaned good down to JD factory paint and then it was done with rustoleum primer and JD green from rattle cans. Going to redo the entire paint job, question is should all of the primer and new JD paint come off or just scuffing it up good work for new paint. Expoxy primer and paint with hardner will be used. thanks for any and all responses. Don c

I assume the spray bomb job is not too old? If so I would remove all of it myself. PPG guidelines state a satisfactory paint job can be put over top of fully cured and well bonded paint but that's two big ifs and a big chance to take for the little additional effort it will take to remove the paint from the sheet metal vs sanding it smooth before priming. I think that they also assume automotive quality paint being covered up. I differ from some of the others here on the castings, depending on how many coats of paint is on them I either wire wheel them with a stiff cup brush or use a needle scaler first but I want the high spots showing metal, paint in the pores does not concern me. The epoxy primer will seal and bond very well but cannot be expected to keep the layers under it from lifting.

Hi Don,

I am definitely not a fan of rattle can paint from any manufacturer nor do I like to mix and match products from different manufacturers in the same paint film. If you are going to use a good quality automotive acrylic enamel with hardener or a urethane, I would remove at least down to the factory paint. I am not sure how you do this easily without also removing the factory paint though. If you want the best and longest lasting product, strip to bare metal and start over with an epoxy and urethane system from a single manufacturer.

Thanks to the both of you for answers, it wasn't what I wanted to hear but what I expected to hear. A very good lesson learned. Hope my arms hold up during the removal of the rattle cans blues.
Thanks again. Don c
