I'm working in the shop preparing a tractor to paint. What is a good solvent to dissolve grease? I have an open flame pilot light in the shop heater so I would like to use something not combustible. I do not have running water. Would like to soak parts to remove grease and old grease.

I use butyl cleaners sold under various "purple clean" names at places like Car Quest, Auto Zome etc. Stay away from Castrol's version its too diluted to be usfull. I mix it about 1-3 with water for soaking and use straight when brushed on. It will remove paint in warm water or extended soaks. Only problem is it should be rinsed off. Another thing that is supposed to work well is oven cleaner but I have never tried it myself.

I'v been using brake parts cleaner from NAPA. A friend of mine said they used it at a mining operation prior to painting. It pulles grease and oil right out of the pores. It also evaporates quickly and you need no water. You need good ventelation and a resperator is best. It really desolves old hard grease & oil fast. I buy it in the gallon jugs. PK
