I was all set to paint my IH 444 this winter with spray bombs until I read this forum. This tractor needs paint, its a working tractor, just want paint on it to preserve it. A local who paints on the side will sand blast and paint this for $375, will have to check on the type paint he intends to use...watercolors? This seems like a really good price, if a pro were to use a decent paint and do all the prep. work whats a fair price?
After reading the forum maybe i should just by a sprayer myself. Your comments are appreciated.
Happy Holidays

A pro job will cost you at least $1500.00. otherwise, it's not a pro job.

Peter,

I agree with the other guys. I'm an ag mechanics teacher (to support my farming habbit) and we paint a lot of stuff with the students. We charge $275 for 40 HP and under, $325 for 41-89 HP, and $450 for anything over plus decals, plus cabs, plus body work (OEM Paint for Case and IH reds, yellows, and Oranges) Sherwin Willaims for everything else. That's pretty much our cost for consumables plus upkeep on equipment. Local body shop who consults with me, charges +$1000 to my prices and that's using OEM paint. Add $200 more for acrylic enamel.

Pete, thats comparable to what a place like MACO does on small cars. What you get is quick once over with the pressure washer, about an hour of light sanding with a power sander on anything that is in the open, then a coupe coats of basic enamel paint. If you are going for cheap, and it is a field tractor, that might not be a bad option. I had MACO paint a truck several years ago. I did a lot of sanding of the old paint, removed the trim, got all the little nookes and crannies cleaned, then took it to them. IF you spend two days preping (16 hours) at $35 per hour you have saved yourself $500. Those guys are good painters, just not a lot of time spent on prep. It cost them too much. I agree, you might want to ask him about the type of paint. Add some hardener to get it a little tougher. This is definitely 100% better than getting spray cans at Wal Mart and doing it yourself. A pro job is in the $1000. up range.

That sounds dirt cheap to me, almost too cheap. I wouldn't do it for under $1000 and even then I really wouldn't make any money on it. Find out what type of paint he is going to use, it must be pretty cheap stuff but ask if he would use a better paint if you buy it for him. If you can get it painted that cheap it wouldn't make since to invest money in painting equipment unless you have several more to do.

I have been repainting all types of tractors for over 12 years. For a quality job his price is to cheap. When you paint tractors you have to spend alot of prep time, for a good quality job, and make sure he is going to remove all of the panels and lights etc before painting other wise its a cheap paint job. DO IT RIGHT OR DON'T DO IT AT ALL. DAVID CITY, NE
