Im getting ready to paint my 47 farmall m and have a few questions. I want it to look good so should i take it all apart and paint pieces seperately or paint it together? Im going to get the paint from my case IH dealer. Should i paint it once or twice? should i get the primer there also? And how much paint should i get,the tractor has a wide front and six wheel weights. Any tips that you may have would be greatly appreciated. thanks alot

If you don't take it apart you won't get good coverage, either on the parts themselves or the metal behind them. Many people just stand back and shoot, not the best paint job. I disassemble, and replace all the seals and gaskets while I'm at it. Not exactly a weekend job. The correct color for your tractor is IH 50, not the 2150 that your dealer sells. The PPG number is 70019. PPG, Dupont, etc, paint is superior to the Case-IH paint. Use epoxy primer, not the IH stuff, regardless of what kind of paint you use. For best results, use primer and paint from the same manufacturer, but I would violate this rule for primer if I used the tractor manufacturer's paint (2150), as their primer is not epoxy. You will need a surfacer for the sheet metal. Best to use all PPG or another major manufacturer. How much paint you use depends on how good you are with the paint gun, and whether or not you use HVLP. An M will probably take a full gallon of paint, perhaps more if you take off the wheel weights and paint both sides of each one. The wide front adds some too. You will need three coats. If you read all the current posts on this forum, you will find most of your questions answered.
