I just finished my first paint job on the sheet metal(farmall super H) used delstar with hardener. a nice shiny finish with some fine sand marks showing through in some areas. The sand marks did not show up until the paint was dry. I used 400 grit prior to painting. I applied 5 coats with no orange peel, Should I color sand or just buff or both or more paint? also what grit for color sand and type of buffing compound.

I'm not going to get into color sanding and buffing here because I have only done it once and have not had enough experience with it. But, if I understand what you have is sanding scratches that appear to be below the topcoat, I do know that either one will not remove your sanding scratches. Your primer shrunk into the sanding scratches and cannot be removed without sanding down to the primer and repriming -- Did you use a surfacer/primer surfacer, or just straight primer? If you did use a surfacer did you use one that has to have hardener? Hardened surfacer does not shrink as much as unhardened, or laquer primer. Basically your sanding scratches were too deep and were not filled with the primer; they were probably not caused by the 400 grit sandpaper you sanded the primer with. Even if you are seeing scratches in the primer, as opposed to the metal, color sanding, buffing, or adding more paint won't help. I can also see scratches under the painting I do, the light has to be just right and thus far I have not found them objectionable.

It is "possable" to wet sand down your top color coat and get those scratches out,...but.... it depends on how many mills deep the scratches are and how many mills thick the top coat is. In other wirds if the top coat is thicher than the scratches are deep , it might work. However remmber you do not want to sand off so much top coat that you can start to see though it. If those scratches really bother you that much try expermenting on say the inside of the hood (if those scratches are there). My sugestion would be to start with 1000 WET sand paper. as far as compund, some companys have as mant as 10 "grits" of compound. If you have any laying around start with what you have. Sand with 1000 wet than compound and see how it looks. If the scratches are still there try again with 800 paper than compund. If still there try again with 600. If scratches are still there I would say live with them or repaint...sorry I was so long.....just my 2 cents worth

Intended to ask and forgot -- Is your paint code 71310 (IH 2150) or 70019 (IH 50)? I too have just painted a Super H--with 71310 -- has a definite orange tint to it -- does yours? I'm trying to decide if it is correct or if it's just a PPG characteristic, or if my dealer is mixing it wrong. I did not use Delstar, but Omni Acrylic urethane, plus some acrylic enamel on some small parts. I can't tell the difference in the color between the enamel and the urethane.

paint was 2150 and does not have an orange tint. I tried 1500 grit paper last night and ultra fine compound. The scratches are gone and the paint looks great. Thanks for your thoughts.

Perhaps it's my eyes. My wife says "looks red to me", its also under flourescent light which may make it appear orange. Glad you got rid of the scratches. I'm sure the ones I have seen were in the metal, the primer did not fill them. My topcoat consists of 3 coats. If your scratches were caused by the 400 grit on the primer, perhaps the five coats helped you out. Probably better to get rid of a couple of coats anyway -- I'm afraid to use five--I have never tried that many. I have heard that Delstar is better than the Omni line (Rod and Butch) but not all dealers have it. The color sanding I have done, I used 1200 followed by 2000, followed by coarse, medium, and fine compound. Worked pretty good, but I produced some fine scratches doing it. Buffing is easy to mess up, unless you have a lot of experience, or a natural technique, I have neither.
