There is no question that paint of that vintage most likely contained lead. Quite possibly cadmium and some other things that aren't good for you also.

The only way to know for sure is a blood test, as was pointed out below. OSHA requires medical monitoring for BLL (Blood Lead Level) and ZPP (Zinc Protoporphyrin) of workers who are exposed to lead in the workplace. Ask your doctor about these tests, we do them for some of our employees here, they are not terribly expensive and if nothing else, can give peace of mind if negative.

Many people think that all lead has been removed from modern paint. Not so! Lead paint is still legal to manufacture and apply as long as it is not used in the interior of a residence or child occupied facilities. Read the label! Paint can contain up to 1% lead and still be called non-lead based paint. It must say "lead free" to be sure it has no lead.

Jerry B is probably correct -- even if he used a respirator, if he used hardener a normal respirator is not enough, as the hardener contains isocyanates -- get him to a doctor and don't guess.

Possible plubism. No telling just how old the paint is.

Paint by itself can make you sick even without lead. The symptoms include flu like ailments, aches and pains, and sore throat. If he painted with a spraygun, inside a closed room, with no respirator, it could be anything.

Don't know what the symptoms of lead poisoning are, but a simple blood test will give you the answers.
