Our local Napa has a good supply of paint and accessories but no one that really understands how to use it. Any MS experts out there that can recommend from the Napa line a bare metal primer, primer/surfacer, Acrylic Enamel JD Classic Green, AE JD Yellow, hardner, reducer, AE clear coat/hardner/reducer that will all get along? Before they redid their line of paints and added the econo body stuff I had better luck picking it out myself. I have used the Tri-o-prime etching primer in the past and see they have something similar in the Econobody stuff now. It appears they have the old lacquer primer/surfacer wereing a new hat now on the econo shelf but I am having a hard time finding the JD colors in acrylic enamel. They keep pointing me at the industrial paint in the gallons. My understanding is this stuff is synthetic enamel and not what I am after. Don't remember there being a SE clear coat. Not sure how synthol would act with acrylic enamel clear on top. Don't really want to find out. I want to be able to use the same reducer and hardner in both color and clear. Anyone have the Martin Senour numbers for the JD colors in acrylic enamel and a recommendation on a bare metal primer off the shelf? Thanks.

What happened when to those times when you could go to NAPA to buy paint. It's been five years since I painted a JD. I have tried PPG & Dupont on the last few tractors but they were Masseys and ACs. I wanted to go back to MS b/c I liked it the best. I am having the same problem you are. I have been aruging with NAPA for three days and am having no luck. I thought we had it lined out but then they call and tell me they dont know if they can mix it then they call and say they can. So last I talked to them I told them to send it to me(paint, clear, etching and filling primer and all nessicessities)and I get etching primer and fill & sand primer and no paint! By the time I recieved it and figured it all out they were closed. So I guess I'll wait till Monday and start all over again. I'm attempting to repaint a 1937 JD AR if you find any good info please let me know!!!

I just took my paint chips out to the garage where I have a 1935 A that I just finished for a customer. I painted it with JD Classic Green from the JD Dealer but put MS 8832 and 8850 Hardener and Reducer in it. The JD Green #3737 chip from MS looks like a really good match to the hood of the tractor I just painted. The JD Yellow chip is not right, though. I don't have a good number for you on that.

I use 15210 and 15212 Econo-etch primer and reducer on bare metal with great success. I would recommend against the red laquer primer on top of the econo-etch as a filler because although it fills well for scratches, it shrinks over time and the scratch marks tend to re-appear months after. Not good. I'm working with my Napa guys right now to find a suitable replacement. I'm steering the conversation toward an epoxy primer, but don't know what we're going to do yet.

I don't clear coat any of the tractors that I paint. I get such a beautiful shine the way it is, that I just don't find it necesary.

Let me know if you have any other questions:

All you need is a 2-part surfacer to go over your etch primer or epoxy primer. Surely MS or NAPA has one.
