After reading the posts on HVLP guns, i'm confused. Do I need a regulator on my gun set a 10lbs. as well as setting my regulator at the compressor at 45lbs.? Mr gun says 45lbs. max. thanks.

Thanks, I had a small regulator with a watertrap on it. I took the guage off and then got a 1/4" to 1/8th" adapter along with a pipe tee and plumbed it to my gun. Will try it tomorrow. Thanks, Mark..

I agree with Rod. However, the gauge you buy may have a regulator with it. In that case, set the regulator wide open and adjust it at the main regulator as Rod says.

Hi Mark,

No, you do NOT need a regulator at your gun inlet. You DO need a pressure gage at the inlet. Forget the 10 psi stated for HVLP guns. It's "at the cap" and you will have no way of measuring it w/o special equipment. Also forget the pressure gage reading back at your wall (or compressor) regulator. It may be significantly higher than a gage will read at the gun inlet due to pressure drop in the hose system to the gun. You adjust the regulator as necessary to get the stated pressure (in your case, 45 psig) at the gun inlet while the trigger is held wide open. The actual reading back at the regulator is not relevant. See also this previous post.
