I got myself an old car trailer up here in Minnesota (salt - rust....) I'm replacing the wood floor, and as long as the old rot - I mean wood, is off, was thinking about giving it a simple coat of paint. Rustolium or some such.

How do I prep the metal? I'm kind of a shoe-string operator, but looking for any tips to make this last a little bit. Wire brushing good enough? Better ideas?

Rustoleum makes a product called rusty metal primer. I use it on metal buildings that have a lot of rust on them. I just spray it on and let it dry four days then paint with whatever paint you choose. It works real good and does stop the rust as advertised.I have used this product for seven years and had real good luck with it. Ron

Hi Paul,

For something like that I would just wire brush any loose rust off and use a product like "Extend" from Permatex (also known as Loctite #754) which is available from NAPA. Then topcoat with your favorite paint. Use a brush or roller with the Extend though; it can really screw up a good spray gun. The brush likely will leave some brush strokes with the product but you probably are not after a show finish on the trailer anyway. It is also available in spray cans but I have found that to be less effective in getting a decent coating thickness/reaction than the brush-on version.
