I just painted my JD Tractor with JD Green paint and an automotive hardener. The paint guy said the hardener i used would give the tractor a nice glossy wet look. However, after painting the tractor i found that the glossy areas were hit and miss, some parts of the tractor were dull and others glossy. I mixed the paint and hardener vigorously before I painted. Anyway, I want a nice glossy, wet look. I just finished putting the parts back on the tractor and i need to do some touching up. Do i buy a high gloss hardener and mix it with the JD green and go over the tractor again, or do I touch up the tractor with the paint and hardener I have now and then go over the tractor with clear coat to make it glossy? Is it ok to paint the tractor again even a week after i originally painted it? Would I need to mix hardener with the clear paint if I went that route? Can anyone recommend a high gloss hardener to use?
PLease help. I appreciate any responses you can give me.

I must also say that I used an automotive fast drying reducer for the JD paint. Would too much reducer cause the dull look on the paint. The temp I painted at was around 60 degrees. Should I have used the JD thinner that you can get with the JD paint. Now that I think about it, the paint is glossier in areas that i sprayed last, which was later in the day and cooler.

Hi Ty,

I have never used JD paint so I can't advise anything specific. However, it appears you are "mixing and matching" products from different manufacturers that are not necessarily intended to be used together. That can be the cause of problems in today's world of complex paint chemistry. I suggest you go back to your paint guy and get some very specific help in choosing and using the products he sells you. Perhaps someone on here who has some experience in mixing the JD paint with conventional automotive products can give you some specific guidance. It can be a crap shoot unless you know for sure, by experience, that a particular combination of several different products works well.

In any event you should not need to use a clear coat to get a nice glossy finish on any single stage paint. If you are not getting a decent and consistent gloss, it could be that there is an application problem, a problem with material incompatibility or a problem with material usage.
