I have a John Deere 430 garden tractor with about 5 deep scratches in the hood. The scratches penetrate through the paint and into the fiberglass. I want to avoid stripping the entire hood and just want to fill the scratches sand them smooth and repaint the hood with JD spray cans (tapeing the decals) What would be a good product to use to fill the scratches? Do the JD spray cans have a hardener in them to give a durable finish?

Was waiting on somebody else to respond because I have little experience with fiberglass. You need to sand the whole hood anyway for paint adhesion. I would first tape the decals to so they don't get ruined. Sand the areas where it is scratched to the gel coat and use body putty to bring the scratches up to level. Then use a sandable primer-surfacer and block sand until smooth. Use 400 grit for final sanding if you are doing it by hand. There may be special primers for the first coat over fiberglass. An automotive paint store would know.
