Paint Stripping:
Okay, I've disassembled the entire disc (link below). I've started stripping the paint (Aircraft chemical stripper), which seems to do a great job!! It'll take me some time to completely strip all pieces to an acceptable condition, but I have time.

Questions:
1. Most of the paint comes off, except for a few stubborn areas, so I reapply, and it still doesn't come off, as if the paint has stained the metal? Should I sand this portion, and if it still doesn't come out, is it okay to prime over?
2. Or, should I use Acryli-Clean? I know I use this before priming or painting, but does it help to remove stained or stubborn paint? Sandpaper?

Painting:
I plan to paint the disc myself, sooo, if your going to recommend I take the pieces to a professional painter, then please do not respond! I need guidance, not paint shops! With that said, I have a budget, and plan to spend the money to acquire a descent gun, and quality mask. By the way, I was at a paint shop, and the gentleman said I didn't have to use a "clean air breathing system" for a one time painting with hardener? I know this isn't recommended, but is it necessary to use a clean air breathing system for a one time gig?? versus a quality mask & eye wear? (if you have no comment on this subject, no problem, I understand)

Painting Questions:
1. What hardener would you suggest? (slow drying versus fast drying) remember summer is here?
2. What paint/manufacturer would you suggest? I plan to paint the disc black.
3. What cleaner to use prior to priming? Acryli-clean?
4. What gun/brand would you suggest? I have a 2.5 horse power air tank (3/8" hose), which I know will do the job, and has a great recovery time! I believe a siphon gun would work best with a regulator attached @ the gun?
5. My budget for gun, hardener, paint, cleaner, mask, and anything else you may suggest is $230.00. Anything below this amount would be a savings!

Are you up for the task? I hold nobody accountable, and view your response(s) as strickly information purposes only! I am responsible for the final choice of the supplies I utilize on this project! Hopefully, I haven't affended anyone, and I appreciate any or no information given!

Note: I've read several Post's and responses, and have a general idea of the process. I printed "Rod's" response to a gentleman requesting assistance on painting without hardener. Which was a great response and detail of process step's I intend to follow??

Thanks.

I'll leave a detailed response for someone who likes to type. If you used stripper, you have to get all the paint off. Wire brush, sand, hammer and chisel, whatever. AND you must get all that stripper out of the nooks and crannies or it will lift the paint. DX330 is to clean before painting, it is not a paint remover. For your budget, I would skip the hardener and use PPG Omni acrylic enamel. Use Omni MP 170 epoxy primer on the bare metal before you topcoat. The catalyst for the 170 does not contain iso's so a twin cartridge mask will do. Your supplier is giving you bad advice about not using a supplied air system, if you do use hardener. Some people get sick the first time, others after several times. You don't want to find out. With your budget you are going to have to use a cheap paint gun. Probably ok for a one shot deal on a disk.

Well, I priced everything out, and I'm looking at $180 - $300 to paint the disc. Kind of pricing for a one shot deal....I was wanting to learn the process, but I believe it may be best to get bids from paint shops and see what they'd charge? Any ideas what someone would charge to paint the disc parts? I'm doing all the paint removal. I'm also thinking I may not have a big enough compressor 5.5 gal/2.5 hp. Here is the link to the disc pics:

I have painted with a true 1 hp air compressor with, I think a 7 gal tank, and a cheap paint gun. Certainly not the best in the world, but it worked. For a one shot deal, it may be ok. If you decide you like to paint, then you need better equipment. The most important thing is not HP but SCFM. Look for a SCFM rating on your compressor. I am guessing that you need a value of about 6 scfm at 40 psi. More is better, Try to find a gun that will work with that air capacity. You may have to use a suction gun, as most HVLP's have a higher air requirement. That said, if that was my disk, I probably would not paint it, does not look that bad in the picture, particularly all the readable lables that you probably can't get any more and would have to mask off. Having it done -- Most paint shops are incredibly busy, and probably won't want to mess with it. I bet if you absolutely cleaned everything and took it to them ready to paint, it would still be a minimum of $200, even if they were standing there with the spray gun in hand ready to paint.

The only way I know of to prevent mutiple posts is to wait 30 sec or so, if it does not take, exit the internet, the log on again -- it will be there. Only takes a few seconds, but is irritating. I have to do about half my posts that way.
