Ok, I am prepping my John deere lawn tractor for a repaint. There are some areas (the fiberglass hood) that I did not remove all of the old paint and just sanded it smooth starting with 60 grit then 100, 150 and a final wet sand with 320. I now have a nice Dull green color with no gloss left. Should I now use primer over this or can I paint directly over the old paint? Also I plan to use JD factory paint should I also use JD primer or can I use Auto store primer? The primer I plan on using will be out of a rattle can but I will paint using a spray gun

You can paint directly over the old paint IF the old paint is tight and in good condition. I would drop down to 280 grit for final sanding rather than 320. You will need one more coat of paint to fill the 280 sanding scratches but the added adhesion provided by the courser paper will make up for it.

As far as using rattle can primer, I have done it BUT rattle can primer has lots of thinner in it and requires much longer to dry properly. A medium coat of urethane primer would be better, although more expensive.
