WHILE RESTORING MY TRACTOR I WILL CLEAN EVERYTHING PART BY PART. THIS WILL TAKE AWHILE AND I WANT TO GET EVERYTHING DONE BEFORE I HAUL OUT THE PAINTING EQUIPMENT. HOW DO I KEEP RUST AT BAY AFTER THE PART IS FRESHLY CLEAN UNTIL I'M READY TO PAINT? IS THERE A PRODUCT OUT THERE TO APPLY FOR THIS PURPOSE? IF SO WHAT PRODUCTS ARE RECOMMENDED AND HOW ARE THE APPLIED (BRUSH, SPRAY ETC)? DOES THE PRODUCT HAVE TO BE REMOVED BEFORE PAINTING OR CAN IT BE PAINTED OVER? THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP.

There are different ideas out there, all have their good points, but mostly appear to depend on what works for the individual. I use a product called Picklex 20 (do a search). It is applied with a squirt bottle and smoothed out or the excess spread out with a brush. It is more of a rust preventer than a rust converter, although it is advertised as both. I get the metal as clean as possible before using it. It does not need to be removed before painting, but should be scuffed with a scotch brite pad or something before painting. It will prevent rust as long as the part is kept dry, probably for months. But, don't get it wet. Only takes a few minutes or seconds to apply, depending on the part. The manufacturer claims it acts as a primer, but I always use epoxy primer over it, as there is no way it can be as good as epoxy. Since it contains phosphoric acid, it will also etch new metal, if you have a new hood or something -- I would sand the hood before application anyway.
