I AM GOING TO BE PAINTING MY TRACTOR WITH PPG PAINT AND HARDNER (I HAVE A FRESH AIR BREATHING SYSTEM). I WANT THE PAINT TO HAVE A REASONABLE SHINE BUT NOT SO MUCH THAT IT LOOKS WET. DO I ACHIEVE THIS WITH A DIFFERENT TYPE OF HARDNER? HOW DO PEOPLE GET THAT WET LOOK---WITH CLEAR COAT? IF SO IS THIS THE STEP I WOULD SKIP? THANK YOU FOR YOUR ADVICE.

Butch's reply is for MTK acrylic urethane. If you use MAE acrylic enamel, the basic hardener is MH 101, there is also a high gloss hardener for MAE (don't remember the number). I have only used the MAE and 101 on small parts, MTK and 168 on the rest. Both looked ok to me. Most of my painting, thus far, has been at about 70 degrees. At that temperature the combination of MTK, MH168, and MR186 reducer have worked fine.

You are correct that hardener affects gloss, so does the reducer speed and of course clearcoating. I'd guess you will find considerable differences in the way somebody discribes gloss. I dont like the chrome paint look myself but do like to have what I call reasonable gloss. If this works there should be a picture below. I used PPG OMNI and the hardener was MH168

Guess I should add that I used the fast reducer (number escapes me) and booth temps were mid to high 60s with very low humidity. My experince with Omni is that hardeners and reducers have a fairly narrow range and that if you error much from optimum it better be on the fast side. Slower reducers allow the paint to lay down more before flashing (more gloss, less orange peel) but will also make for runs if you are not right on with your techniques.
