Has anyone tried the Valspar paint hardener? our local Tractor supply sells it for $9.00 for a small bottle I think it is about 1/2 a pint. I plan to use it with John deere paint and JD thinner.

Back when I was using some of the implement enamels from TSC or Farm and Fleet I used some of that hardender with mixed results. One thing that is very imortant and appears on the directions of only some of the containers is an activation time between mixing and application, seems to me it was 20-30 minutes. That type of hardener in the paint I was using seems to help some with color retention, it also seems to speed the time between dry to the touch and dry enough to assemble but does not seem to affect the time to fully cure, meaning getting as hard as it is ever going to get. I spilled some gasoline on two week old paint hardened with it and it bubbled up like it was 4 hours old. It does not work like the better quality hardened paint I use now. I have no experience with JD paint and it may react differently. I would either go with a recomended product or spray a test on some scrap first.

One of the advantages to hardened paints is their gasoline resistance -- However, while putting gas in my Super H, painted about 4 months prior with MTK/168, the spout of my plastic gas container popped out and spilled gas over about half the gas tank. I immediately wiped it off, I think I should have just let it evaporate. It did react with the paint,or perhaps with the rubbing compound. When I painted it I had more orange peel than I like, so I componded it and buffed it out. Just before I added the gas, it was polished again by hand and waxed. I was able to polish the damage out, it did not bubble or in any way eat through the paint, but I can still see right to the line where the gas went-it is not bad enough to repaint, and probably would not be noticeable if I didn't know what to look for. I have a feeling that the gasoline reacted with the rubbing compound I used, plus the more recent polish and wax. I am always going to use a funnel from now on.

A little off topic here but what the hey? I have found that gasoline spills are best left to evaporate and drips will damage anything I have ever painted with no matter how old. Another bad thing for paint is fuel stabilizers. Stable brand will screw up your paint no matter how old it is. It doesn't lift but produces an instant flat finish that for some reason wont even buff out right.

CNKS: your post prompts me to ask this question. Do you think the 10% ethanol content in a lot of marketed gasoline these days gives the gasoline a more powerful solvent characteristic?

I don't know where ethanol resides with respect to the solvent ability of denatured alcohol. Denatured alcohol is used in some paint strippers. My W-9 has a leaky float bowl, and the drippings immediately curled the paint where it had come in contact on the engine block. Same for the area around the gas cap which had a poor sealing gasket. The paint is curled and gone from that area.

Butch and Joe. Both of you could be right. My first reaction was to grab a rag and wipe it off. Since I doubt if it would lift the paint, I probably should have let it evaporate and then polish it out as best I could--but I'm still not sure whether the rag made it worse, or if leaving it on longer until it evaporated would have been worse. One thing for sure, I'll never add gas without a funnel again. I don't think the gas I used had alcohol in it, if so it may well have had some effect. Same with additives -- I don't know, but I hope I don't have to find out.
