Painting the pieces..............?

Okay, one more question..... ..

1. Is it possible to paint in 2-stages? What I mean by this is that I have one piece to paint that is very heavy, so I was wanting to paint one side first, roll over and then paint second side. Is this possible? Also can you paint outside, in the shade w/ no breeze?

I plan to hang most of the parts so I can paint consistantly and straight through, but I may have a problem with this one piece being so heavy.

Thanks for the help guys.

Since you are spraying iso's without the proper protection, you BETTER paint outside, you will still be breathing them, just not as much (cough, wheeze). If the piece you are painting is long and narrow (such as angle iron), I would stand it on end and prop it against something, let it dry, then turn it over. If it sticks to something, you can touch up the end that the paint comes off of with a brush, probably not noticable. Don't put paper under it, guaranteed to stick the paper to the paint. If you have to lay the painted side down, I would wait until the next day to paint the other side. Sometimes things that appear to be dry aren't. However, I would paint the whole thing with 170 first, it drys fast, then topcoat one side. Depending on the shape of the part, if you prime and topcoat one side, when you turn it over, unless the piece is absolutely flat, you may get 170 on the other, painted side. You will quickly find out what works best for your particular part.

I plan to make sure my area is well ventilated. I also plan to paint all pieces with 170 prior to topcoating. I figure 170 on Friday (all parts), and then I have Saturday and Sunday for topcoat/touchup. What do you think?? I think I'll lean the big piece against a piece of wood and topcoat oneside, turn and paint the other side the next day like you said. Would it be okay to clean, sandblast this coming weekend, and then paint the following weekend (memorial day)? I plan to keep the parts inside, and out of the elements to reduce chances of surface rusting. If it does surface rust prior to me painting, I just have to sand, and clean really good with 330, correct?

Ventilation doesn't have a lot to do with iso's, you will still be breathing them. I can't tell you what your painting schedule should be. Read the p-sheets and take it from there. I have NEVER planned the timing on a paint job and had it come out the way I planned. You have to figure it out for yourself. Just don't exceed the 72 hour limit for topcoating the 170, or you will have to sand and apply it again. As to rust, this goes against the rules, but for a disk, unless you can actually see the rust, just paint it. I would not do a tractor that way. There is a product called Picklex 20 that will solve your rust problem--$30 a pint, mail order only, but you probably don't want to wait. There are other products, also, but Picklex is the only one I have used.
