I had some parts that I wanted to prime yesterday. My Rustolem primer instructions said to use acetone to thin with. I didn't have acetone so I used mineral spirits. It applied well and seems to be holding well. Did I screw up when I did this?
Thanks in advance!

Paul, i did the very same thing a few weeks ago before it got cold. I used rustoleum and mineral spirits for thinner and seemed to turn out fine. This was on an ole finish mower.

Acetone is very fast evaporating. Mineral spirts will be fine for what you did. A recent EPA ruling also has granted exemption to acetone because it does not contribute to the problems associated with photochemical smog. Acetone is now considerd a non-VOC so it can be freely used as a paint thinner and is not subject to regulation. Many industrial and auto paint manufacturers have adopted it use for this purpose. I don't agree with what Rustoleum has done by recommending it though. Acetone has a flash point of Zero degrees F and is one of the most dangerous items you can put in the hands of a consumer.

I think the big differance is that the actone would flash off faster and give you a quicker dry time.
