I would like your ideas on painting wheels with the tires mounted, how do you keep paint off the tires and if paint does get on the tires how do you remove it?,I have in years past used a tire black paste which you applied with a sponge but I have not been able to find it lately has anyone seen this stuff? Thanks

I clean around the rim to tire area, with laquer thinner, then mask around the rim edge with masking tape, 3/4 inch, then lay newspaper on the tire, use several "tacks" of tape to hold it, then cut around the rim edge, with a single edge razor blade, and throw away the inner cut piece. Then tack it down, tape around the rim, and cut the other piece, and tape it to hold it in place, taping around the rim where you've put the tape around the rim edge! Fold in the outer paper edges, and tack tape them together. This covers the whole tire, doesn't take long once you've done several wheels, and is an easy clean up! By: Rusty Jones

Here is the method I use. I take some aluminum flashing, wrap it around the rim at the bead and use spring paper clips to hold it together, spray inside the flashing.

The best way I've found to do this over the years is to mask the tire. Start at the rim with 1" #M tape and carefully place the tape around the perimeter of the rim taking care to tuck it into the edges. Then take some wide 3M tape and cover the tire at least 2 tape widths up. Easier to tear the wide tape into 4" strips and place them around the perimeter. After painting and tape removal you'll only need to clean the upper edges of the tire with thinner to remove any over spray. Be sure to remove the tape right after painting and clean the tire or the overspray on the tire will be very difficult to remove if left overnight.
Good Luck!

I DEFLATE THE TIRE IF THE BEAD CAN BE BROKEN, AND PUT PAPER OR OTHER THIN MATERIAL ( TAPE WORKS ALSO) INTO THE OPEN SPACE BETWEEN THE TIRE AND RIM. WHEN THIS IS DONE, I REINFLATE THE TIRE. THIS KEEPS THINGS NICELY TUCKED AWAY UNTIL THE PAINTING IS DONE. WHEN EVERYTHING DRIES, LET THE AIR OUT OF THE TIRE AGAIN TO REMOVE THE MASKING. THIS METHOD WORKS NICE AND IS NEAT BUT DOES TAKE A LITTLE EXRA TIME.

If you have a few the same size, it pays to make poster board shields that will fit 'between the rim and deflated tire. Cut the rim radius on three sections and insert them so they overlap, no clean-up needed
