I'M NEW TO TRACTOR RESTORING. COULD SOMEONE EXPLAIN WHAT SURFACER IS AND WHAT IT DOES? ALSO, I'VE SANDBLASTED SEVERAL ITEMS SUCH AS THE SEAT, GRILL COVER AND HOOD. THE AREAS THAT WERE STILL COVERED WITH ORIGINAL PAINT CLEANED UP VERY NICE AND THE BARE METAL IS CLEAN AND SMOOTH. HOWEVER THERE WERE OTHER AREAS THAT WERE RUSTED. THESE AREAS ARE NOW DOWN TO CLEAN METAL BUT ARE PITTED AND ROUGH FROM THE YEARS OF RUST COVER. HOW DO I CORRECT THIS SO THAT THESE AREAS ARE AS SMOOTH AND UNNOTICEABLE AS THE NON-PROBLEM AREAS AFTER THE TOP COAT? I'M AFTER A FACTOY FINISH AND PLAN ON USING PPG PRODUCTS. THANK YOU.

You will get various opinions on how to fill rust pits, depending on who answers. I believe the last time I did that I used one of Evercoats products -- this is a body filler product, but sands a little easier, still a lot of work. Comes in both paste and semi-liquid forms. There are other brand names also. PPG also makes a sprayable body filler, but I have not used it. I use epoxy primer over the bare metal and filler, others will tell you to use epoxy first, then filler, then more epoxy. I have no problem with that. If you are using PPG Omni, the number for epoxy primer is MP 170. It is not sandable, or at least not easily sandable. Surfacer or primer surfacer is sandable and is used over the the MP170. You do not need surfacer on the cast, epoxy is entirely adequate. The single stage primer surfacer is 181 (I forget the prefix) the 2 part (contains ios's) is 182. 182 will shrink less than 181, but you must use a supplied air system with it. You can apply, sand, reapply and sand, etc 181 or 182 until the surface is smooth. It is possible to use 181 over bare metal, but I would not recommend it as better adhesion will occur if 170 is used first. 182 is not recommended over bare metal at all, if I remember right. Read the spec sheets on all these products before you use them.

Jason,it depends on how much time and effort you are willing to put in to it,My first choice is to use a primer filler I use Sherwin Williams Ultra Fill it goes on heavy and after a wet sanding you will see improvement you can do this as many times as required.Another method that I have used is glazing compound put it on like body filler and sand it smooth.Good luck
