I noticed some of the spray is not as shiny as other areas? In other words, most areas look nice and solid/glossy, and other areas look flat. I have 5 small pieces to paint, so I was thinking about hitting those areas one more time....can I just clean the painted area, and spray over, or do I have to rough with sandpaper or scotchbrite? Remember, I just painted the topcoat last weekend. If I had everything painted, I would think about it, but since I have to topcoat 5 more pieces, I might as well hit the other areas.

If you used hardener, at a minimum you need to scuff it with scotchbrite pads first. The shineyness or the lack of it is probably related to how close you held the gun -- HVLP should be about 6 inches perpendicular to the surface--hard to do sometimes on odd shaped parts. Another thing that happens is dieback. That occurs when you don't let the first coat flash (become tacky) before you apply the next coat. It can also happen if you make a second pass over the what you just painted "just to be sure it is covered" -- I have done that. So I think it's mostly technique, mine is not very good sometimes.

Cnks- That makes sense, that's exactly what I did, double passed vs bad angles. The piece odd shaped and tough to spray, especially with a gravity feed.

Looks like the answer is in. I can add I have had that problem when painting to close to nightfall or unexpected rain. Damp air before the last coat has set, can dull the finish.
