I DON'T WANT TO BLAST MY ENGINE FOR FEAR OF SAND GETTING INSIDE. I'D LIKE TO USE A PAINT REMOVER AND WASH IT DOWN AFTERWARDS WITH PHOSPHORIC ACID TO HELP CONTROL THE RUST. THE QUESTION HERE IS, WILL THE ACID RUIN SEALS AND GASKETS IF IT RUNS INTO THOSE AREAS?

I answered below as well, i will add oxisolv won't harm paint, rubber or gaskets. It will discolor chrome plating and gun blueing. It is bio degradeable and you can reuse it if you can catch the run off.

If you use the Picklex 20 I mention in the above post, I don't think you have to worry about gaskets. HOWEVER, when I use the product, the water pump, governor, and other accessories etc, are off the engine because I want to clean/paint them separately. There are no exposed engine seals on the IH tractors I have worked on, but you don't want it in contact with any rubber-type material. I usually install new gaskets for the oil pan, valve cover, etc after I have cleaned everything. I do leave the head and head gasket installed when I'm doing the prep. If you use the metalprep Rusty mentioned (At least what I call metalprep), you have to wash it off and prime immediately. All phosphoric acid products are not the same. If you are using an automotive type product, do what the label says as to use and priming. I, personally, would not use the hardware store version of phosphoric acid for fear I would mess something up, either the engine or the paint. Again, only my opinion, presented without proof.

For the phosporus treatment, buy a product called Metal-prep, available at auto body supply stores. for the paint remover, use a product called "Aircraft Stripper", also available at the places named above. If you are afraid of it hurting the seals, clean that area good with mineral spirits, then maxk around any place you want to protect, with masking tape. use 3-4 layers. You can wash the stripper off with cold water, sand any rust spots, get it ready to prime it, after peeling off the masking tape! Rusty Jones
