I am restoring an 861, my first ever tractor and first ever restoration, and would like to find out what others think of this product, POR-15 Rust Preventive Paint.

Hi Matt, I used the por-15 on my 42 H and If I had the chance to use the 15 agaian I WOULD NOT. Just more work to do,not so sure it was worth putting on a parade tractor, don't like the way the top coat is sticking to it. my 2 cents.

Hello,
As an experiment Por-15 was used as a primer on an undercarriage--where paint is always scratched and worn away by sand. The idea was the paint would last longer due to its rock hard reputation. It was used over blasted metal. Then it was treated with chemical rust remover--per the instructions whether you brush the loose rust off or blast it. It was used as insurance for rust pits that couldn't be reached. The rust has not returned in 12 months on a main frame except for an unexplained chip or two (kids, lawn mower ?). The main problem is poor adhesion to top coats even when scuffed with 600 grit per the instructions. No peeling or wrinkling or lifting but as parts were reattached top coat and epoxy primer will flake off as parts are bolted down. Instead of scratching into paint, bolts pull it off in flakes exposing Por -15. Top coat and primer adhered to each other but not to the Por-15. They make a "sealer" that's suppose to help adhesion, when you add up the cost with the Por-15, sealer and rust remover, it's not cost effective. Sun sensitive fades quickly. Also only for bare metal not over partially painted surfaces. Very messy to handle, you must ladle it out of can and not get any in can groove or it will harden and lid won't come off. They recommend a sheet of plastic between lid and can.

Next time i tackle this type of repaint, i will try a rust convertor instead due to the less than good adhesion, cost, and labor. The Por 15 itself adhereded well to bare treated metal but not to epoxy primer.

Thanks Dozerboss. I think I'll pass on the POR-15 this time.

I used Por-15 about thirty days ago for the first time on a lift gate, frame, engine and the back of a box truck. The rust on this truck was terrible. I remove all of the scale with a air hammer and a grinder with a wire wheel. I followed the directions to a T. Then I topcoated it, but after thirty days the rust is starting to come through the paint. I'm not at all happy with the results especially for the price, time spent, and the hype I heard and read about it. Maybe if I would have blasted everything and used it like primer it would have worked better, but that defeats the purpose. This is just my one time use, experience and opinion. Thanks, Paul
