New to this site.Love it!I see epoxy primer is recommended in several places. Not familiar with it although I have painted tractors for years. Why do you use it?What are its advantages? Disadvantages?Clean up materials? Have used epoxy paint and know it is tough and tough to clean up after use but never sprayed it before. Thanks, bob

The reason I use epoxy primer is threefold. It attaches itself very firmly to the base, be it bare metal or prepared old finish. It seals the base from moisture and resulting rust and when topcaoted with a compatable material in the proper time frame the topcoat is chemicaly bonded to the underlayments. I clean up the equipment with the same reducer I have on hand for my topcoat materials, only because I always have that on hand. Gun cleaning colvents are cheaper but I have to remember to buy some when I get paint plus its another can and another part number for me to remember. The only disadvantages I can think of is recoating time frames and cost. Recoating times vary from brand to brand but I dont know of any that are over a week. When restoring a tractor after work and inbetween all the other must do's in life I don't get a lot of parts recoated in the data sheet time frame. Some guys get around this by using rust preventers (see posts below). I chooose to coat with e primer right away when the parts are cleaned and sand the primer before priming again just before topcoating, that's just my personal prefferance. When you are used to $6 a quart Rustolium the cost of eprimers might raise your eyebrows but for my labors they are well worth it. One thing we now have that was not generaly availible a few years ago are the "economy" lines from people like PPG and Dupont. They are very close to top of the line products in quality but at very reduced coast. My line of choice is PPG OMNI but there are several others.

Butch covers it well. I use it because it waterproofs metal and body fillers from rust. The bonding of the paint molecules to each other form a waterproof barrier. Other primers can't do this due to their composition.

Also, it will accept filler over it instead of having to apply it to bare metal. If you need to fill a surface you can sandwich the fill between primer coats which waterproofs it. Most paints are porous and allow small amounts of water to reach the base metal and any filler (which absorbs it like a sponge if you have seen rust bubbles reform around bondo repairs on cars, that is why). Over time rust forms under existing paints not primed with epoxy. That's why car wax was invented originally--to seal the pores of the paint. Now they sell it as a shine enhancer/UV protectant, but it's purpose is to seal the paint's pores. For me is worth the extra cost of epoxy for the protection it provides.
