I have seen some excellent work done with these sprayers particularly on my JD 730 that I had painted.

Everything Ive heard is good and its said they will make a painter out of most anyone.

I would appreciate any comments and possible pitfalls as Im ready to buy one

Are you talking about the turbine powered HVLP guns or one that runs off a normal air compressor? I haven't heard many good things about the turbine powered models unless you spend $800-$1000 for a top of the line model. The newer compressor powered HVLP guns will lay down glass smooth paint fairly with a little practice. No matter what type of gun you get if you get a better gun you will get better results. A professional painter can get good results out of most any gun but for the beginner a good gun will take the work out of it. I have a Sharpe Platinum from the site below and I really like it.

I am not to good at cleaning up guns as I have to work in a lot of short trips to my shed where I work on my tractors. Some times I am planning on getting back to the shed in an hour or two and it ends up being a day or two. I have a large box full of old guns that might be able to be soaked and get cleaned up. I have two cheap HVLP guns that I just love. I thought some one else had come and repainted my tractor tin the first coupla times then I got this crazy idea that I knew what I was doing. Furgit that. Thinning the paint correctly seems to be the real secret for me. With the cup guns I have this Orange or Meadow Green mustache and eyebrows, With the HVLP I can sneek in a house with only the smell on my clothes, Might even get set down in a chair afor I get yelled at to go get cleaned up and change.

They definitely take some getting used to. I've used mine on two tractors and a 53 foot trailer and I learned to buy cheap paint until I learn to use it properly. My paint will be dull in places and glossy in other places. Maybe someone on here can straighten me out.

You need to apply more coats of paint. Several thin coats will always work better than one thick coat. When you are painting and everything looks nice and covered, GIVE IT ANOTHER SHOT. Another light coat that is. Multiple coats also reduces the risk of runs.

I have had great luck with my HVLP gun, it uses less paint and I get less overspray and less fumes also. But still ALWAYS wear the proper mask.
