What kind of paint can I use on a carburator that will not wash off from gas leaks ?

I now use spray can black lacquer and it seems to hold up pretty well. Back when I had my hot tanks for gun blueing I ran the castings (assuming they are cast iron) through the tanks for a permenant fix. If you have a gunsmith nearby you might ask him, should not cost much to blue prepared parts, just make sure he is running the cast iron additive in his tanks.

i dont put a color on the carb. i shine it up and put a clear. when it looks discolored, i can clean it up easy, and put more clear.

Very tough to duplicate a plated surface. If its a yellow zinc finish like holley carbs use, Eastwood Co. makes a restoration paint just for carbs. I Have never used it. I can't see how a paint can duplicate a plated surface. I guess its one of the methods you can try in the shop as well as the clear coats. Somethings like plating are beyond duplication with paint. Every once in awhile somebody tries to market a paint as good as chrome, complete with a plastic chrome plated top on the can. I have tried a few, there just silver. Short of having the carb replated, i would weigh the cost of the clear over the carb paint (assuming it matches). One of the problems i have had with clear is it tends to crack in engine bays. I think due to the heat and fuel/oil fumes. Maybe someone else has found something that lasts?

I once cleared a valve cover on a Honda 4 cyl. It was aluminum that had a lot of oxidation on it. I sandblasted it with the extra fine Black Beauty grit so as not to leave a noticeable profile. Used an aluminum chemical prep and just cleared it. It was during an engine overhaul and I wanted to retain a nice new aluminum appearance. I can't remember what clear I used. It was either DuPont or PPG urethane. Looked great for quite a while after use in my wife's car. I never noticed any cracking but did notice a gradual darkening to a grayish shade over time. Still nice and glossy however.
