Any of you folks ever use Sprayon Zinc-Rich Cold Galvanizing Compound? Was reading about it on a couple of web sites and now thinking about applying it in my cattle trailer. I will apply a top coat over it also.

I have one tractor that has lift arm stabilizer chains that are coated with this type of paint. Never seen any rust on them. Opinions please.

qThe spray and brush on types i have used are not made to be top coated. Suggest you read the instructions on the can before trying, you may get a top coat on it, but find it peels over time. Hot dipped galvanized can be top coated successfully if you use the correct primer. I remember some heavy duty Ford dumps and cargo trucks used galvanized on the cowl panels back in the seventies. The reason i know is they peeled and you could see the unrusted galvanized that was under the paint. I see a few barns in the same condition that have been painted over and are peeling. I believe a zinc primer is the correct one, but its been a while. Double check that if you decide to try it. I repainted the sheet metal on a galvanized heat pump cover that was successful (8 years ago). But that was simple one part rustolem, not automotive uality paint. Good Luck.

Thanks for the reply. Here's what the description is for the Zinc-Rich Cold Galvanizing Compound on a web site.www.arizonatools.com Features: Fast-drying, high-solids, high performance, epoxy-based coating. Provides maximum protection to steel exposed to severe corrosive environments. Fuses zinc to the metal substrate to protect against corrosion; equal to or better than hot-dipped galvanizing. 97%-pure zinc dust. Excellent anti-sag and anti-settling properties. "May be topcoated with conventional primers or finish coats."

Highly resistant to salt corrosion and water. Meets or exceeds performance requirements to MIL-P-26915C. Outstanding weld thru primer. Uses: Surfaces subject to severe corrosion and rust conditions, such as fences, gutters, bridges, structural steel, wrought iron, farm equipment; ideal as a maintenance spray for highways, food plants, power plants, refineries or damaged galvanized surfaces.

I'll be using it only on the inside of the cattle trailer. I haven't decided yet but may put the roll on bed liner coating over it.The directions does say it can be top coated. It doesn't say the top coat may peel off.(LOL) And I know from barn tops that it will if not treated before painting. I've ordered some and will give it a try. Figured since it said it could be top coated it may have been made to do so.

Thanks again.

Try doing a search on "STEEL-IT" Stainless Steel paint. I bought about three cans 8-9 yrs ago and used it on some really trying applications like spare tire wheels under the back of My pickup, battery trays under the hood, etc. Stuff does NOT rust. They even make a Hi-Temp version.

Yes, no paint product would sell if they put may peel in a year or two on the label. Depends on what a conventional primer or finish coat actually means too. Sounds like epoxy primer or a two part paint with hardner is out. I know regular metal etch won't work on hot galvanized to prevent peeling, but i don't know if that barn painter used primer or not--all i see is peeling red paint and he's not around anymore to ask. You wouldn't etch your coating regardless. Else where on the board someone posted zinc primer is no longer made due to the efforts of tree huggers.. I need to find
out about if true and if there is a replacement. That was a standard in the auto industry for a while before e-coat.
