Overspray Dulled Finish??

I believe I committed a cardinal sin yesterday.

Last weekend I painted the engine/front end/ trans of my 51 Cub, and yesterday I went back and sprayed a bunch of other parts (MTK) in the same work area (garage). I didn't cover up the what I had previously painted because I wanted to touch up a few spots there also. Now, while I don't see any rough overspray particulates or dust on the older work, I also don't see quite as shiny and liquidy a surface that was there before. I assume the problem is over spray in the air, even though I was using a HVLP gun.

Is that the problem? Fortunately I haven't painted the hood and fenders yet, and while a little loss of shine on the engine isn't the end of the world, I would like to get the liquid look back on the front end particularly. Should I just Scotchbrite it a bit and repaint that area, or compound it, or buff it, or what? I'd appreciate your suggestions. Guess next time I should cover the older paint when I'm spraying.

I'll get it right one of these days . . .

Give ir another coat of paint.
I know of a guy that waxed his tractor, all of it !
He had one heck of a time getting all the castings clear !

I just added something about overspray to your original spot gun ? I should have read this first. I will include this info on painting bolts too, :

I try to replace bolts with the yellow zinc for grade 5 or 8 or stainless steel where ever a grade 2 bolt will do and leave them natural as a personal preference. When i do paint bolt heads, i use a sheet of card board and punch holes in it. That protects the threads from paint, then i spray them from one direction then bend the card board or turn it to catch the other side as needed. Their are bolt protector socket liners out there, but i use Rod's touch up artist brush method when needed or a foam brush and some times paper matches in a pinch after bolt tightening.

Live and learn -- nothing like making a mistake, you won't do it again. I never heard of compounding cast, seems with all the nooks and crannies, it wouldn't work too well. You might buy some hand rubbing compound and try that, it might work, particularly since it doesn't have to (and won't if it's cast) shine like sheet metal. Otherwise scuff it with scotch brite--you may need to use sand paper in any tight depressions, and give it one more coat of MTK. Be sure the rubbing compound does not contain silicone, in case you need to repaint, but clean the surface good with wax and grease remover anyway and be sure that it does not dry on the surface--wipe it off immediately.
