I'm planning to repaint my tractor with tractor enamel. I got a can of Valspar enamel hardener to make the paint better, but I don't want to spray it myself. I'll let a someone with proper equipment to deal with Isos do that. Or is there a way to paint the drivetrain castings without spraying and still use hardener safely? Could it be rolled or brushed on with lots of ventilation safely? Could the sheet metal be rolled or brushed and made to look good? I'm wondering if I had lots of air movement and didn't make spray mist, and wore a respirator, would it be ok? Thanks.

Spray the enamel without hardener-- you will get a much better finish than with a brush or roller, hardener or not.

The problem is you are playing Russian Roulette. Brushing/rolling is not really an option if you want a decent quality job. The official line is a supplied air respirator for all iso work - including mixing! I have heard from a couple of painters who use a quality conventional respirator and change cartridges frequently. If you are in an open air environment and use a HVLP gun, you might be OK but you will want to cover your head and body as well. The nasties can be absorbed theough the skin and eyes also. I got started with a supplied air rig because I was unwilling to shave my full beard but using it convinced me how nice it is. Basically, you have to understand the risk and make your own decision
