I want to paint my MF 35 but I am not sure what to do about cleaning the engine and what to use to get ready to repaint.

My techniques vary with the condition of the engine, hard baked crud, loose crud and loose paint all have to be dealt with. Pressure washing is a good start but I dont have one so my first step is scraping, I follow that with a butyl degreaser-cleaner and a stiff brush. These are sold under various purple clean names at auto stores. Use the house brand and stay away from Casterol Super Clean as it is too diluted to do good work. Ordinary soaps dont remove grease and oil remnents good enough to suit me, butyl cleaners will remove all traces of it. I follow that with a hot water rinse and then hand and power operated wire brushes to remove everything that is loose including paint. If you want a nice looking job it is impossible to work around the manifold, carburetor, various linkages etc and they must be removed. I then clean again with purple clean and rinse. If needed repeat all of the above until clean and prime ASAP.
