I have a aluminum transmission that I would like to get to either a pristine original look or clean enough to paint. I do not want to dissasemble so that eliminates sand blasting. The oxidation? seems to hold the grease rather tenaciously and spray bomb engine cleaners do not touch the grease. Suggestions?

Hi Smoky
A couple of cans of oven cleaner and your local car wash will do the trick nicely.
Let that oven cleaner soak in for a while and work the problem areas with a small toothbrush style steel bristle brush before washing.
The hot and soapy water should do the rest.
Good Luck!

Gene

Be careful with the oven cleaner- it usually contains sodium hydroxide (lye) and will attack aluminum! It's OK on steel or cast iron though.

Nothing like a pressure washer or steam cleaner. If you don't have, a paint stick, nylon bristle brush and eng degreaser will work without harming the aluminum. A lot of elbow grease and multiple washes. I haven't tried oven cleaner, wal-mart has degreaser for 90 cents a can here so oven cleaner @ 2.50 a can isn't my choice. Is oven cleaner ok on seals/gaskets as well? I believe some use it to strip paint too. I'm sure it's a harsher cleaner.

If you use the eng degreaser, you should rewash with a water based degreaser like purple power or simple green if you plan to paint. The kerosene film left by the walmart stuff can interfear with paint adhesion. I have had purple power bleach and discolor paint, so i only use it on old finishes for final cleaning before sanding. No problem with simple green. That cleaned tranny would look good with a coat of urethane clear IMOP. The white oxidation on aluminum actually protects it from further deterioration. Unlike ordinary steel once alum. is coated with the white oxidiation it stops oxidating, but it is unattractive. Now i hear there is a steel used on power poles that has the same properties. I was wondering why they went from galvanized towers to these ugly unpainted rusty poles for the high tension wires.
