I just painted my M with IH 2150 and I noticed wrinkles on the hood in a few spots could I let it set good and sand it out with fine grit and airbrush the spots or would I be better off to strip it all and start over the only thing is that I did a lot of dent repairs on it so if I strip it I will have to re bondo it again . what would cause the wrinkles ?

Hi Marty,

Matin Senour's troubleshooting guide might help you out. Takes a while to download but is well worth it. Save it to your hard disc for future reference. Look under both the "lifting" and "wrinkling" categories since they are similar in nature.

I am not familiar with the paint you are using but if it is an unhardened enamel you could have further difficulties in trying to recoat it. If the areas are not too large relative to the entire hood and if you used a hardener, then I would clean up the bad areas, scuff sand everything and recoat the whole hood. While some can do spot repairs and make it look decent, I have never been able to. Doing entire panels is a better option, at least for me.

Recheck the product spec sheets, There a a few possible causes. Incombatable materials: Wrong primer or a primer or old paint that should have been sealed. Contamination by oil or grease or wax or stripper--surface wasn't clean. Not allowing enough time between coats for thinner to evaporate. If something can go wrong it will....Its possible to sand out the damage and feather edge the good paint and recoat if its just small spots due to limited contamination or too fast recoat. That requires the right grit paper. It's a judgement call. If you used the wrong materials or didn't clean with wax and grease remover before painting then you should strip or it may peel later if you repair it. Is your air supply clean, filtered and free of water or oil vapors as well? If you have the right materials and a clean surface and applied them as directed,my best guess is not enough (flash) time between coats.
