I,m painting my tractor with MTK acrylic urethane. I found PPG's website and there product sheets but the don't say much about there reducers and hardeners. I assume the different reducer and hardener numbers have to do with the air temperature, but they don't say what reducers are recomanded for a specific air temperature. I assume the same holds true for the hardener. Does anyone have any expeirence with this paint or any advice. Thanks Dale L.

Hi Dale,

Yes, unlike DuPont, PPG OMNI doesn't mention what specific temperature ranges are recommended for their reducers and hardeners. And it's not just the ambient air temperatutre. It's also the metal temperature. The two should be one and the same. You shouldn't paint until they are. PPG just uses general terms like fast, slow, etc. Here's my own personal interpretation of the ranges:

Fast reducer, MR185 = 60-70 deg F
Medium reducer, MR186 = 70-80 deg F
Slow reducer, MR187 = 80-90 deg F
Very slow reducer, MR188 = 90+ deg F
Fast hardener, MH167 = 60-75 deg F
Slow hardener, MH168 = 70-85 deg F
Very slow hardener, MH169 = 80+ deg F

These are not hard and fast bands but should provide a decent starting point. Depending on your technique and ability you may be able to use a slower additive than the above would indicate. I would not use a faster one though.
