I FORGOT TO ASK IN MY PREVIOUS POST. AFTER I OPEN THE CONTAINERS FOR PPG MP170, MP182, AND MTK ACRYLIC URETHANE, HOW LONG WILL THESE PRODUCTS REMAIN USEABLE IF RESEALED PROPERLY? WHAT IS THE SHELF LIFE AND POT LIFE? THANK YOU.

Except for hardener, there is no shelf life (within reason) as long as you keep them mixed and sealed. Hardener, on the other hand, when opened has a shelf life of about 2 weeks, longer if refrigerated, longer still if gas is added and it is refridgerated. As to pot life -- that refers to after reducer, hardener, etc, are added, it may be 30 minutes to several hours -- it will say on the spec sheet.

Your right pot life is mixed. a little sleepy at 23:00 when i wrote. What kind of gas is that?

I have a never opened Qt of urethane thats still liquid after 14 years! Its a paper weight for spec sheets currently.

One product is called Bloxygen -- Sold by, I think, Hartville Tool. I don't weld so that's what I have used. As to the life of hardener, I once had some paint on some tractor lights that didn't seem to cure properly, hardener was opened about a month, don't know if that was the problem. At that time I didn't know about the 2 weeks, although it says right at the top of the can.

There is a special gas marketed for blanketing previously opened hardeners and activators. I forget the name of it and have never used it. My guess is if you have pure agron around for TIG welding, a shot of argon before capping would be just as effective and cheaper since you already have it.

I've used some MH186 hardener (about 1/2 pt) that had been opened two years previously. No gas blanket and no refrigeration. No particular problem. That's generally not recommended however and I think the formal maximum time is two weeks after first opening.

I have a pint of PPG DXR80 hardener for Delstar and a pint of DuPont 793S hardener for Centari that are both over 20 years old. Never been opened but are still obviously liquid (confirmed by shaking the cans). Still good? I may find out in another 20 years -- I still have a half gallon of DAR 9000 black leftover from the same time period :o).

I"ve had several people suggest that straight argon is a good chioce. It is heavier than air and inert so it should stop any oxidation in the hardner can. I put a little T and valve on my TIG to make it really easy to take that precaution. With the cost of hardener, it is cheap insurance.

Thanks Rod, i have argon and argon co/2 mix on a mig welder.

I just used up a qt of omni mh 169 hardner nearly two years old but opened about 3 months ago. Worked fine.

The guys at the paint counter told me 30 to 60 days on everything. Now I think that's their way of saying it's yours you bought it after they mix it, don't tell me it doesn't match in 3 months. A disclaimer for them to us guys who clean up parts overtime for paint day. They have never heard of stuff like picklex.

If you drive over some of those rocks and stones you have around, I'm sure you'll have an opportunity to test that paint. A sliver of rock about 1/4" went thru a steel belted radial on me one time in N.H. Dardest thing i ever saw flatten a tire. Bet those little pieces of granite cause some pretty deep dings and plenty of windshield business.

I cant remember the times listed on the cans either but they are on all the containers and some are quite short, like a week. I think those times are the minimum with bad storage as I have used 1 year old opened hardeners myself with no problems noted. As DB said the life is extended quite a bit with tight sealing and refrigerating.

Didn't double check this but most are 30-60 days once open. Depends greatly on your climate and i think that pot life is a disclaimer for the paint company just in case. My rule is if it's liquid it's still good but i test it first. Move over the pot roast and put it in the refrigerator that will extend potlife/shelf life. I have stored as long as a year both refrigerated and not with no problems.
