I live and woork in Cambodia, take care of orphan homes, but I own 6 antique Case Tractors, all of which I want to repaint. Anyway, Cambodia is a little different, no OSHA, no reperators, and a life expectancy of about 43 years. I shudder when I go to our mechanics shop, as there is always a dull fog in the air, we have about 20 vehicles, and he has a body shop adjoing his shop. Here is something I observed the body guys doing. Cambodia is a poor country so they like to save money on paint. After they have evrything bondoed and sanded they buy any kind of cheap lacquer and mix plaster of paris with it until it gets about as thick as pancake batter, they then trowel this on and wet sand it after it dries. They get mirror smooth finishes and they say it really cuts down on the ammount of paint needed. The cars look good and the color seems to hold up. has anyone ever heard of such a thing?

I doubt if it lasts long. The reason they get a good finish is that lacquer must be sanded and rubbed out after application anyway. Lacquer is about the worst paint, in terms of durability, there is. Many people have used it, or the newer acrylic lacquer, on show cars. Used to be factory paint on new GM cars and others--usually doesn't last. It just fades fast, and I imagine with plaster of paris, chips easily.
