I've not used one of them before, but have admired the results-- much better than I've been able to achieve with conventional primer. Are two components involved, and are they harder to apply than the ordinary stuff? Is it true that sometimes 6 coats or more are required? What is a good product to try (for a first-time user)?? Thanks!

Urethane surfacers/primer surfacers are 2-part, they require hardener. Lacquer primer surfacers are one part. The advantage of the urethane ones is that they don't shrink as much as the lacquer primers. If you have deep sanding scratches, lacquer primers can bridge the gap and shrink into the scratches after the topcoat is applied, revealing the scratches. If you have only shallow scratches either is ok. the number of coats depends on the condition of the metal. About 3 sanded coats is about as much as I want to apply. It is possible to get the stuff too thick. If you use 6, it had better be sanded down to the equivalent of about 3, IMO. In the PPG Omni line MP 181 is a lacquer primer surfacer, MP 182 is a urethane surfacer. Always use either over an epoxy primer, as they may not bond well to bare steel, particularly the urethane ones. Either may go on a little rough, but it has to be sanded anyway.
